چکیده
Abstract Purpose Among the several methods to measure 222 Rn in water, liquid scintillation counting (LSC) technique is one of most sensitive and widely used when analysing non-saline waters by extraction, providing excellent accuracy, precision low-level detection limits. When using counter Tri-Carb 3170 TR/SL (Perkin-Elmer) it not possible make an automatic determination alpha/beta discrimination parameter, being necessary evaluate pulse decay discriminator (PDD) value manually determination. In this work, we describe steps perform calibration that type equipment. Methods The method consists preparation standard samples from a 226 Ra certified solution adjustment PDD hand until percentage alpha events reaches plateau near-constant fraction total events. process taking measures between 80 200 with 15 min time each. Within plateau, ratio was determine final range as well optimum value. After that, standards blanks were measured region interest (ROI) established finding maximum for figure merit (FOM) upper lower Results optimal 148 ratio, after calibration. An efficiency (9.758±0.035) × 10 –1 obtained. routine measurements, limit about 0.50 Bq L achieved 120 time. To uncertainty budget, uncertainties net count rate, efficiency, sample amount correction factor considered. Conclusions A developed LSC optimization solution. acquisition obtain plot variation each window (alpha beta) function allowed where at minimum. Afterwards, set equilibrium analyses.

Cocktails for Liquid Scintillation Counting
It is most important to assure 4 π−geometry in liquid scintillation counting for accurate results1. Usually this can be assured by dissolution of the sample in an appropriate cocktail. The cocktail does not only contain a solvent but also at least one scintillator and surfactants for aqueous samples because aqueous samples are completely insoluble in the pure organic solvents and scintillators....
متن کاملFast determination of indoor radon (222Rn) concentration using liquid scintillation counting
The indoor 222Rn radionuclide was directly absorbed in typical 20 ml glass scintillation vials by passing -3 dm3 of ambient air through 16 ml of water-immiscible non-volataile scintillation cocktail Ultima-Gold F for 10 min. The activity of radon and its two α-emitting daughters: 218Po and 214Po, was determined with the BetaScout low-background liquid scintillation counter. The limit of 222Rn d...

discussed, and he points out that merely because a disease is found to be familial in incidence does not mean it is hereditarily transmitted; leprosy, for instance, was long held to be a hereditary disease, and a law was actually proposed in the Norwegian Parliament forbidding the marriage of lepers for that reason. It was only with the discovery of the leprosy bacillus by Hansen that the true ...
متن کاملSimultaneous determination of gross alpha, gross beta and ²²⁶Ra in natural water by liquid scintillation counting.
The determination of gross alpha, gross beta and (226)Ra activity in natural waters is useful in a wide range of environmental studies. Furthermore, gross alpha and gross beta parameters are included in international legislation on the quality of drinking water [Council Directive 98/83/EC]. In this work, a low-background liquid scintillation counter (Wallac, Quantulus 1220) was used to simultan...
